Gemutlichkeit

Gemutlichkeit

So, as you may or may not have heard, we got a little bit of snow yesterday! :D

Seriously, from about 2:30pmish until at least 1am or so, it was insanely windy, white out blizzard conditions. I left work early and it still took me an hour and a half to get home. The wind was blowing everything everywhere, you couldn’t see more than a block away for the snow. Motorists got stranded on Lake Shore Drive, neighborhoods lost power, I heard the waves at the lake hit 18 feet at times.

But around 6pm, my brother texted me to see if I wanted to get dinner at our corner bar. It’s a short two blocks away, and I knew they were open, so I said okay – thinking we’d go down there and keep the bartenders company. Surely we were the only people crazy enough to be OUT on a night like this, right? Seconds after we got there, we realized our neighbors Scott and Randi had had the same idea – and so had half the neighborhood. By 8pm the bar was as packed as if it was a Friday night! People just kept coming in, talking about the weather, sharing stories, sharing meals, having a few beers. And I was reminded of this word that I had heard somewhere, Gemutlichkeit. Wikipedia says the closest English word is “coziness,” but that it connotes so much more; belonging, warmth, cheerfulness… I remember the first time I heard of this word, I knew immediately that I wanted to devote as much time as possible towards pursuing it.

The snow’s coming down again, although not as terrifyingly windily as it was last night. I’m very grateful to be working from home today. :)

Oh! Finished those hourly comics! You can read them here! There’s a bunch more here, but if you want to see a few of my favorites, check out Tony Breed’s and J. Barret’s.
