I think you're sauceome.

So the game that I’m playing right now is Persona 3 Portable. I have Persona 3 for the PS2, I’ve played it… god, three times through at least. Persona 3 and 4 are by far my favorite video games, and in this new version of Persona 3 for the PSP you can play the main character as a girl, and it’s fair to say I’m pretty obsessed with it.

ANYWAY. I was walking home from yoga tonight, thinking mostly about playing Persona 3 when I got home, when I started remembering Persona 4 a little. I played that game at least three times through as well, and to be honest I’ll probably play it again once I’m done with P3P here. But the point is, okay, Persona 4. One of the major themes, probably THE major theme of Persona 4 is facing your dark side. You’re standing there with your best friend Yosuke, and standing in front of him is a mirror image Yosuke, tendrils of dark smoke rising from his body, his eyes glowing crimson, a wicked grin on his face, and oh, the THINGS he says. The worst most horrible self-deprecating things that Yosuke has ever, ever thought about himself, and this Yosuke-shaped creature is standing there voicing them all, spitting out each world with malice and relish. It’s actually pretty chilling every time it happens, and it happens to a number of characters in the game.

Yes, I know, I’m obsessed with these games. But I was a little surprised that I had forgotten this tidbit about Persona 4, and I thought, what am I doing here with Sauceome if not facing my dark half? I mean, the evil snakey head monster is certainly me, a piece of me. Everything he says comes from my own head.

In the game, if you deny your dark side and try to claim that it’s lying, that you never think those horrible things, it turns into a giant terrifying boss-monster that you have to fight. Of course everyone denies it, because those fights make the game more interesting. But still, it’s a compelling metaphor. Now that I’ve been facing that voice and dragging snakey head monster out into the light, he’s become a lot easier to deal with. And he’s been showing up a lot less, too.
